Final Magazine Advert
George Watkins
This is my final magazine advert which is the same as my third rough cut as I have made no improvements as my feedback from my third draft of my magazine advert suggested that no improvements could be made to effect the appearance and quality of the magazine advert.
To summarise on my magazine advert as you can see the main colours used on the poster are black, white and grey, the reason I have chosen these colours is because these are common colours used by The 1975 who are the band that we are using for inspiration when designing our media products and also our music video as we have made our music video to the song 'A Change of Heart' which is by The 1975, which you can see at the top of the poster as I have put into bold text the name of the band and the name of the song that I am promoting in this magazine advert.
As for some of the logo's at the bottom of the poster I have decided to include the record logo that we made in our group '25 records' to help promote our record label, I also have the iTunes logo to show the public where they can buy/ download the song/ album. I also have 4 social media account logo's, the reason I have done this is to give the work a more magazine advert type feel by using these logo's to promote the bands social media accounts and inform the public that they can follow the band on social medias such as Twitter and Facebook. Continuing on down the bottom of the poster I also have two 5 star ratings from newspapers as I have seen this used on magazine adverts I have seen when researching music magazine adverts and thought it would be a good feature to include to make my work stand out as an advert. Also I included a small bit of text down the bottom reading 'song available for download now' just simply to inform people that they can download the song and do not have to wait for a release date.
Finally the image used on my magazine advert which I changed the colour to from its natural colour to a black and white image, however the image which is my own did not have much relation to the music video so I added in figures of a man and a woman facing away from each other looking as if they are purposely ignoring one another, the reason I have added the figures in was to link the magazine advert to the music video as in our music video the main characters are a man and a woman who have a brief tale of love before falling out due to a secret being uncovered.
another few improvements I made were to make all logos in line which I have done however I have not put our record label logo in line with these logos as I want it to stand out and also make the size of the newspaper reviews bigger which I have also addressed.
Final Digipak
George Watkins
This is my final digipak made up of 4 different faces separated by a plain grey spine so that once the digipak is folded together it should like a CD case. To conclude on my final digipak it is quite clear I have used the same image for all 4 faces but of different colours, the reason I have done this is because I feel that it is simple but still looks good, the same image that appears on this digipak is also the same as the one on my magazine advert but of different colours, the reason I chose to use the same image was because I wanted to give the song/ album an identity or recognisable image which is why the same image has been used on both media products despite it differing slightly. Moving on to the back cover of my digipak which is the bottom left square, I have made the back cover of the digipak black and white to keep theme black and white theme associated with The 1975 and the indie genre. displayed on the back cover I have our record label in the bottom right corner for the same purpose as having it on the magazine advert, the promote our record label company, as well as this I have the list of all 17 songs on this album and also a bar code in the bottom left corner to give the work a digipak feel to it and make it seem as if you can actually buy it off the shelves.
As for the front cover of my digipak which is the bottom right red square I went for a very plain approach to keep the main focus on the band name and the album name as this is what I want the customers to see at first sight so black text on a light red background stands out for people to see, I chose red for the front cover as this colour links well with genre of the music video I believe as in the video there is a romance between a man and a woman and red is a colour often associated with romance and love. The top right cover is a plain green, this face will be the inside face that is next to face where the CD will sit, I decided to keep this face plain as I didn't want to over complicate the digipak or make it look scruffy by adding unnecessary features, however I could attach something to this face such as a slip of paper with information on it e.g. the list of songs on the CD which many CD's cases do have for example this one here;
The final cover I am yet to touch on is the one of which holds the CD on it, the CD will sit where the black circles are on the face, the reason I have added these black circles is to make it look like there a CD in the case as I want to show that the CD will have the image on it that it covers up from the background so the image in that face will look the same with and without the CD in it.

Magazine Draft 3
George Watkins
I haven't made many changes to my magazine advert from my 2nd draft however I have made one slight change as one highly recommended improvement suggested to me was to try and relate the magazine advert to the music video as it didn't relate to the music video at all in terms of the images or text used other than the black and white colour scheme as we use black and white clips in our music video for flashbacks. To address this problem I have carefully edited in a male and a female figure and changed the colour of them to a solid black so they fit in with the colour scheme of the advert, the reason for me adding these figures in was because in our music video we have a male and a female character who are the main characters seen within the video. The reason for the man and woman standing back to back seeming as if they are ignoring each other also relates to a scene in the music video when the woman finds out the man is cheating on his girlfriend with her and she gets very angry and leaves the pub disgusted with the male character.
I also have changed the centre image to black and white because not only is it a reference to the band themselves but also I think it contrasts nicely with the pink. The black and white can also be seen in our video as well as the photo is a scene in the video so the audience can relate all of the products together nicely. The black and white male praying is also a visual from my favourite music video 'Energy' by Drake and so shows influences from other medias, and possibly could attract the more mainstream audiences for young adults (Which I found out is the audience in my Drake - Audience Profile)
I also made the band's name larger because I thought my other magazine rough cuts seemed a bit too bottom heavy, and due to the nature of the album having such a long name there is not much I could change underneath, so I decided to make the band name bigger to try to even it out. Also I believe having the band name larger would jump out to audiences more and would attract a wider audience for the band.
I also changed the use of speech marks to forward and backward slashes, which is something the band used to use and so I wanted to make the magazine advert more recognisable to the fans of the band.

This is my final magazine advert design. It has changed from my original idea in a few way, including changing the background from black to a pink sky. I chose this because I wanted to have a way to link the magazine and digipak and so I thought a good way to do this would be to use the same style images in the background on both. This is better than using black because if I used black it would be too similar to the band's actual work. The pink also is very feminine which is suitable for the album and also the character in our work.I also have changed the centre image to black and white because not only is it a reference to the band themselves but also I think it contrasts nicely with the pink. Digipak Draft 3
George Watkins
This is my final digipak, I have made one small change from my second draft in that I addressed some feedback I received that I could try and link my colour scheme used on my digipak to my music video, for example I have changed the orange face as this has no relevance to music video whereas the red does as red is often linked to love and our music video involves a love story between a man and a woman who are the main characters in our music video. Some final feedback on my final digipak was that people liked the colours used on it and all the colours work well with the texts on the digipak as the text does stand out despite being layered onto a colourful background. Final bit of feedback also included that the top two images need to be flipped 180 degrees otherwise when you fold up the digipak they will be upside down.

Rough Cut 2 and Feedback
George Watkins
This is our rough cut 2 which isn't a full music video but a big improvement from our rough cut 2.
feedback we received on this rough cut consisted of;
positive; nice range of shots used for example in the bathroom when the camera is being used as a mirror by both the male and female, good and clear narrative so far, good locations and lighting.
negative; complete the music video, the 180 degree rule was broken in the scene at the pub, add some transitions perhaps at the flashbacks to emphasise on the change in time, could any lip syncing clips be shown to try and show off editing skills and finally could the visual quality of the music video be improved in anyway.

Magazine Draft 2
Billy Parker
This is my rough cut 2 for my magazine advert idea. One of the changes from rough cut one is the centre picture, which I changed due to feedback telling me the photo wasn't very well structured, which I agreed with. I decided to use this photograph because it links with our video nicely as it is seen in the video. I think it is an intriguing photo and it will attract the people reading the magazine because it brings a few questions to their minds. The photo has a lot significance with the title of the song as well as you can see a male contemplating over something and he looks fairly upset, possibly even praying.
I also have changed the outline of the rectangle because feedback I received included how the rectangle was too shaped and didn't look right and so I have changed the outline to a fade to hopefully make it seem more suitable and appealing to audiences.
George Watkins
This is my second rough cut for my magazine advert of which I have made several different changes to after receiving feedback from peers and teachers, some of the changes I have made from my first magazine draft are the fonts of all text which I have made the same and also made the text bold so that it stands out more, as well as this I also added in some social media account logo's to give the poster more of an advertising feel as having these logo's advertises to the public that you can follow the band on different social media platforms such as; twitter, Facebook, Instagram and sound cloud. Another slight change that I made based on feedback from class mates was to change the star ratings from the newspapers so that the stars and white instead of yellow as white fits in more with the colour scheme used for the magazine advert than the yellow which doesn't feature in the magazine advert anywhere else and also the yellow stars attracted the eye to much and they aren't the main focal point of this magazine advert.

Digipak Draft 2
George Watkins
I have made some small changes to my digipak from my first draft after I received feedback saying I could add some more institutional logos, make the CD circle look more realistic and also add some detail to the spine of the digipak, so I addressed this feedback by adding in an ITunes logo to the bottom right corner of the digipak front cover, adding some detail to the spine of the digipak between the front and back cover which is the main bit of spine that will be on show, the content I put on the side was the bands name (The 1975) multiple times just so that if the digpak was standing on a shelf you would be able to tell from this spine what music is inside the digipak. I also changed the plain black circle that was meant to represent the CD to make it actually look like a CD so its more realistic as from this you can see what you will and wont be able to see of the image on the face once the CD is in the digipak.
I received some more feedback for my second digipak and peers said that to improve I could look into relating the digipak to the music video more, perhaps see if other colours you could use that would be more suitable than the ones that are already being used.

Music Video Rough Cut 1 and Feedback
Billy Parker
In terms of rough cut 1, we have received a fair amount of both positives and negatives. One positive of our work so far is that the narrative is clear, which is something we were worried about. Another positive about our work from feedback is that there is a nice variety of shots in the work. Another example of a positive in our work are the mirror shots, which George and I also like how they turned out.
In terms of negatives, of course one of the largest is that the work is not completed. We will be working on this in the next few weeks. We have to film a large scene which takes up a lot of time in our video. We also need to try and steady some shots as some shots especially in the car are very shaky. Also it has been pointed out that the female character is wearing her shirt in bed which may not be typical or expected and so we are going to try and work a way around this.

Magazine Draft 1
George Watkins
This is the first rough cut I made for our groups magazine advert, I have the name of the band and the name of the song we are suppose to be advertising in white at the top of the page in a font also used by The 1975 themselves who are a band we have used thoroughly for inspiration a lot during multiple different tasks. the main feature of this magazine advert is the image of the wooden jetty stretching out into a lake, this is my own image that I took whilst visiting a friend in Finland therefore I am allowed to use it, the only tinkering I did on the image was changing it to black and white as these are common colours associated with the indie genre and the band The 1975. Below the image I have used a black box to try and blend the image in with it, on this black box I have a few features to try and make my work look more like a magazine advert for example I have added a couple of logos which are our record label and then the iTunes logo to inform customers where they can download the song, as well as these logo's I also have 2 newspaper article 5 star ratings which I included as people who see the advert may be convinced the song is very good. the last feature I haven't yet touched on is some more text on the black box which reads 'SONG AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD NOW' however it is in different fonts which may need changing in future dates, the reason I have included this text is to show customers that the song is out and they can download it.
Billy Parker
This is my original idea for a magazine advert. I have chosen to use the rectangle which is iconic of The 1975 because I know that they have built an image around this rectangle design and I want to make our magazine advert recognisable to my target market. I have used simplistic fonts because it fits in with my research on indie magazine adverts as well as it fits in with The 1975's adverts. I chose to put the name of the artist on it's own at the top of the page because typically in the indie genre the bands are trying to gain exposure and so putting the name of the band at the top in order to try to catch the attention of consumers. I also have chosen to use a black background with white font because not only does it fit with the indie genre and the artist themselves, but it also links with some concepts of the song 'A Change of Heart' with there being conflicting themes throughout the song. On my magazine advert I have also chosen to not use any social media platforms as I believe it will cramp up the bottom of the page and it will mean that the simplistic and professional look will be lost. I also chose to use reviews on the magazine advert to try to sell the artist and single.
The image I have selected is of the character in the music video. I have chosen to do this contrary to the typical magazine adverts in the indie genre because I want our magazine advert to link with our video and digipak, and basically our whole music video is about the character. The photo I believe has significance to our video for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is a visual which you actually see in the video so people will be able to instantly relate the two. Secondly, the photo has a lot of significance to the character in our video. For example, there is a large amount of black taking up the screen which could connote how the character is in a dark stage in his life. There is only 3 forms of light, whcih are the lamp post, the speed limit sign, and the character's white shirt. I believe that there is a large amount of significance in this photo. we see the sign is in between the light and the character, which could have connotations of how there is danger in the character's life and how in order to get to nicer times in the character's life he will have to face the troubles. The character is facing away from both the light and the sign, which could represent how the character is trying to ignore the troubles in his life. The white of the character's shirt may be representative of how at heart the character is trying to do well and he is trying to do the right thing. White also connotes innocence, which could further represent how the character is young and isn't ready for the rest of the world which could be represented by all of the darkness in the photo.

Digipak Draft 1
George Watkins
This is my first draft for my digipak, despite planning on making a faced digipak I decided in the end to make one with 4 faces as I found it hard thinking of things to fill up all of the 6 squares and a design that I thought looked good so in the end I went for a 4 faced only used one of my own images however altered the colours so they appear different at first sight. on the bottom right face I have the band name 'The 1975' and also the name of the album below that as this is the front cover of the digipak as I do not want to much stuff on the front cover which could take the attention off the band name and album name. on the bottom left face which will be the back cover of the digipak I have our record label logo in the bottom right to promote our institute, I have a barcode on the bottom left to make it look like a real CD case/ digipak that you could purchase in a shop, as well as these small images I have all 17 names of the songs that are on this album by The 1975 in a white text so that they stand out on the dark image behind. finally the top 2 faces are rather simple, the green face will stay exactly how it is and is probably the least important face of the whole digipak as the blue face next to it holds the CD which will be placed in the location of the black circle and the CD will have the exact image on it that is within the black circle so that it matches the background image that it will fit onto.

Shotlist For Magazine
Billy Parker
In terms of my own magazine design which I had to do, I chose to use an exact video from our video in order to link the video with my magazine advert nicely. Some of the images which I plan to use include the following sections from our shot list:
For our magazine we already had a good idea for what we wanted, which was an image which George took whilst on holiday before, and we believed that it would suit our video nicely and we believe it can bused nicely to intrigue and attact a wide target market.

Shotlist for digipak

Our digipak is very simple and doesn't contain many shots/ images, the only image we used was one I from my own phone which I took on holiday so it wasn't even taken during the production of the music video, here is the image that I used.
Here is my digipak where you can see the changes I have made to this image to put onto the digipak.

Equipment information
Billy Parker
Equipment used in video:
Equipment used in video:
iPhone
iPhone stand
Light
For our video we decided to use an iPhone. This is because of the ease of access we had to it and how we could carry and set it up easily in different small locations, for example on a dashboard. The camera quality is also very good and so really we saw no downside to using an iPhone. One of the only problems we encountered whilst filming is that we ran out of memory space on the phone as there were a lot of clips which we were using, but it was easy to sort out and make some space and so it didn't hinder our work particularly.
We also decided to use an iPhone stand for some of our shots. The stand allowed us to safely hold a camera in one position in places like the bathroom. Overall we didn't use it for many shots because it's quite big and takes up a lot of room anywhere we were trying to film, which is why so much of our clip is filmed by hand. I personally prefer filming by hand because it can give the video a more of a realistic feel and can maybe make the audience feel more involved in the story line.
For some shots we had to use a light in order to make sure the camera could see everything in shot, as the camera was not very good in situations that are not lit very well.

Casting Information
George Watkins
When it came to picking actors we had to think more about
availability of that person than the quality of the actor given the short time
period we would have to film with it getting dark very early meaning we had a
small window of opportunity to film.
Our music video has 2 main characters, a boy and a girl,
then we needed around 8 or 9 other people to take part in the house party
scene. For the main character of the woman I had 2 different options who were
both fitting for the role however one girl’s availability wasn’t as good as the
others who goes to the same school as us which would make things a lot easier
so the female we went for in the end was Molly Collier.
Picking a main character male was a lot harder than finding
a female due to a lot of the options we had in mind or friends who could help
us out being busy during the time we wanted to film with hobbies and jobs
getting in the way so in the end as a group we decided that using a group
members brother would be the best for us as we could guarantee their
availability and they agreed to be in the video so in the end we picked Tom
Watkins for the role of the male.
For the members at the party this will be the easiest
casting we will have to do as they will not necessarily have to act or sing
just do what they would usually be doing at a party so we shall gather a few
school friends together, a rough split of boys and girls to help us create the
scene of a party.

Audition Information
We didn’t have a massive auditioning process when looking
for people to be in our music video due to the lack of availability of a lot of
people we could’ve had in our music video as we needed people who were similar
ages to us 18/19 year olds. In our music video we needed over 10 people which
include;
-
Man (main character)
-
Woman (main character)
-
Waiter (pub)
-
10 people for party scene
For the main character woman we knew someone who fit the
bill perfectly as she is into performing arts and music so we could guarantee she
would play a good part in the video, especially as we had seen her act in
school performances before. As for the waiter at the pub we decided to pick
someone who worked there that we knew as we think they would suit the role as
they would know what to do in this role as they would do the exact same thing
when they were working.
When looking for male character options were limited so we didn’t
really have an auditioning for the male main character we just had to go with
what was available.
We also didn’t feel the need to audition the people who were
taking part in the party scene as there was a large number of them and the role
is relatively easy therefore we did not feel the need to put these characters through
an auditioning process.

Lighting Notes
George Watkins
The lighting
within our music video will of course change due to the nature of the locations
we are filming for example our first scene involves some naturalistic lighting
of the sun shining through the curtains in the bedroom backed up by what you
can see in the shot is supposed to give of a morning/ early afternoon type feel
to the timing of the first scene. As the music video progresses we will have
some more naturalistic lighting but this time the shot will actually be outside
as the man (lead singer) is walking from his to the bar.
As previously
mentioned we are going to be having a house party scene in our music video
which brings in high key lighting/ strobe lighting as we may have a lot of
bright lights in the dark room and set the scene up to look a bit like a disco.
These examples of lighting will be used throughout the music video however in
one scene you may not be able to identify the type of lighting as we wish to
add in some black and white flashbacks purely down to the fact that we can make
these flashbacks with a black and white tint as black and white are some of the
main colours associated with Indie/ Pop , for example the song that we are
doing for this coursework task which is
'A Change of Heart' by The 1975 has a music video filmed entirely in black and
white so we have used that video for inspiration in a way when thinking about
how we are going to film our music video.

Ideas For Magazine Advertisement
George's Magazine Advert;
This
is my idea for the first magazine advert I am making for the artist I am
inspiring to and referring to throughout this blog, this band is ‘The 1975’.
After looking at several different magazine adverts and looking into the genre
of Indie/Pop I came up with a final idea I then had to make on the computer.
Some
of the features I added include the bold title of the band and the song name
which is rather simple and stands out very well on the dark background, the
information text telling you that the song is out now, our record label, ITunes
logo so customers know where to get the song and 5 star ratings from 2
different newspaper companies which are all features I have taken from examples
online and used them to good effect for myself.
Some
of the key factors I considered to make the advert look fitting for the genre
was to make it black and white as these are common colours associated with
indie/pop for example the song we are re-creating ‘A Change of Heart’ is filmed
entirely in black and white therefore I wanted this to be the main feature of
the advert, as well as this I also needed an image for the base of the advert
which I could revert to black and white. The image I used was one I took myself
whilst on a visit in Finland which I particularly like and also feel it could
be used on my magazine advert as some magazine adverts and digipaks of the
Indie/Pop genre I looked at have empty but nice looking landscapes or nature
related landscapes on them hence my decision to use this image.

Ideas For Digipak
George Watkins -
This is my first idea for a digipak, I have used the same image on this digipak as I have on one of my magazine adverts however this one is in colour unlike the magazine advert so there is a slight difference, the picture of the sunset will be on the inside of the 6 faced digipak so when you open it up you can see this image and the CD which will have the same image on it which it covers up on the background image, my reasoning for chosing this image was to keep a running theme between my digipak and magazine advert to give the album I'm promoting a similar look on a media platform. As for the 3 faces that are covered with black and white smoke these will be the front, 1 inside cover and back face once the digipak is folded together, I decided to pick black and white as these are colours associated with our genre of choice and it also makes the title stand out as well as all the other writing on it, as for the smoke I used this as its plain and simple so it makes whatever is on it stand out. The bottom left face which will be the first inside cover before you fold the whole thing out to see the sunset image is our record logo ‘25 records’ to show the institution linked with the marketing and the production of the music video.
Billy Parker
I have chosen this as my digipak idea for a number of reasons. mainly, the colour pink is significant because of the feminine turn that the band's second album took.

Location Scouting
George Watkins
In our music video we used a
number of locations, the locations we used are as follows;
-
2 different houses (Including rooms such as a
bathroom, bedroom, kitchen, living room and hallway.
-
Pub (Car park and pub garden)
-
Country roads (For driving scenes)
When it came to finding to houses to film, any house would
do the trick but we decided to use the group member’s houses as we wouldn’t be
reliant on anyone else to be able to film in these locations and it is
important we have 2 different house representing the boy and the girl’s houses seen
in our music video. In the girls house the rooms that are seen are her living
room for the scene of the party and also a scene where the girl is chilling on
the sofa and then receives a text. A bathroom for both the boy and the girl to
look at themselves in the mirror to sort their appearance out after a rough
night. Her kitchen for when the boy and the girl first begin to talk at the
party. And finally the girls (or any) bedroom for when the boy and girl are
seen together the morning after the party.
The second house is the man’s house where you don’t see as
much of it as the girl’s house, all you see in the man’s house is the bathroom
where the boy gets ready to go to the party and also an exterior shot of the
man walking into his house after returning home from the pub.
Another location that we used momentarily was some country
roads we used for the driving scene, the reason we used quiet country roads was
because they weren’t too far from our houses, quiet and also had very plain
naturalistic backgrounds so the main focus would be on the car and the boy
driving the car.
Another one of our main locations we use for our music video
is a local pub which we use for the scene of the pub car park and the car
pulling into the pub, this pub is very close to the location of the country
roads, the pub is called the Rose and Crown. The reason we chose this pub is
because the roads outside of the pub are quiet making the film production
easier and also it had an empty car park which we also needed for filming. The second
pub we used was also another local location the Angel which we use for the
scene in the pub garden where the man and women meet before their argument begins
as the girl finds out the boy has a girlfriend of which he has cheated on with
her.

Props Information

List of props used:
List of props used:
- Alarm clock
Originally we planned to use a real clock where you can see the values of the time clearly and easily, however we decided to change and use the digital alarm clock to show the use of technology to represent the age of the characters.
- mobile phone (broken)
For our film we planned on just using two random phones however the actress in our work had a phone with a broken screen which we thought would fit nicely in our work and so she allowed us to use it, which also lead to some more links with lyrics and visuals in our work.
- mobile phone (working)
We made sure to use an iPhone for the male character as opposed to other phones because this shows how the character is sociable as well as is interested in using the most recent technologies.
- Bottles of wine and beer
We used a lot of wine bottles in the party scenes as well as beers, which we thought would be suitable for a number of reasons. The idea of a party and drinking alcohol usually is associated with slightly older demographics than our characters (our characters are 17, commonly the ages expected would be 22/25) and so we thought about ways to show that our characters aren't actually allowed to purchase alcohol by using their parents', again showing their low age and immaturity
- Plastic cups
We chose plastic cups as they are common and expected at house parties.
- Menus
We used actual menus from The Angel pub because we thought it would be the best way for us to have professional looking menus rather than creating them ourselves. The features on the menus are not significant to us anyway so it was just a matter of what would look better.
- Car
The car we have used is an old Ford Fiesta, which is because this was the car that our actor was insured on and the car had to be seen driving on roads so it was our only option. I also believe it looks good and realistic that the character would be driving a car like this and so it doesn't seem out of place and it is quite a common car for the age demographic so the car represents the low age of the characters.
- Hair brush and aftershave
We chose to use a hairbrush and aftershave in the later scene because not only does it show the male is getting ready to go out again but it also shows he is at his own house and so the audience can see that he is in a different location than he was earlier in the video.

Costumes Information
George Watkins
As the narrative of our music video is very life like we
will not being going for any extravagant costumes for the actors in the video,
in fact we have gone for a very plain look. The actors we wish to have consist
of a man character who is a male that is seen singing a lot of the song in the
video and also a female which is a partner of this male that will be seen
several times and also some extra people who will be seen at a party and also
in a bar where one of our scenes is filmed.
The costume we have decided to go for which our main singer
will wear is a mix of black and white colours that we have taken as inspiration
from the band The 1975 as their lead singer often wears black and white
clothing as these colours are commonly associated with the Indie/ Pop genre.
For the rest
of our characters we have concluded that they will be wearing clothes that you
may see being worn by teenagers of 17/18 year old's at a house party so for
instance dresses and jeans and a similar dress code we hope in the bar however
we may not be able to determine the dress code in this location as much due it
being an open to the public location.
We have
considered about changing the lead singers costume during the music video as
this does commonly happen in music videos so we have decided that perhaps he
could be wearing something different at the start of the music video to what he
is wearing come the end of the music video to relate our music video to many
others such as the attached music video below where you can see that the lead
singers (Will.i.am) costume differs throughout the course of the music video.

Filming and Editing Schedule
Our group set a target of 4 weeks starting from the 24th
of October to the end of November to create 3 rough cuts of our video and be
given feedback on them and make improvements if need to, the make these rough
cuts we would need to film 114 different shots and edit them together and then collaborate
the visuals with the song that we are using for this task.
To save time we are roughly editing our clips from home
using IPads and IPhones and also recording the videos on our phones as we
believe they are better quality than the cameras available and also one
positive we have of editing at home is that we are making better use of time as
we are not waiting to edit during school time as we can do it from home.
To be more productive with our timing we have decided to set
out our filming schedule so we film all shots in one location before moving
onto the next just in case we miss out any shots from that location or things
start to become confusing and time consuming as we may have to film in multiple
locations in one day. We use several different locations in our music video and
multiple different naturalistic lightings, we do not have a preference on which
order we will film our music videos however we will order it in terms of what’s
available to us on that day.
Lighting also comes into play with our schedule as it gets
dark very quickly leaving us little time to film using the ideal lighting we
want so we have tried to schedule our filming so that we film all shots when
its dark in one location or a close by location at the same time and all shots
at dusk at the same time and so on.

Inspiration From Other Media
Billy Parker
For our work I would like to get a few references in the video from other media texts, specifically other The 1975 music videos. This is because the fact that the band also do the same thing in their videos constantly hinting towards their older videos and work. First of all, I feel like the first piece of inspiration will be the existing music video for ‘A Change of Heart’. We will be taking inspiration of the male female relationship with the focus on the male and how he seems to mess everything up which is a plot line we will also be using.

Another example I believe I would like to reference their music video ‘Robbers’ and take it as inspiration because the video is extremely interesting and it depicts a relationship which seems to be a prequel to the song ‘A Change of Heart’ which is the song we are doing. I will want to use some of their techniques of showing arguments between characters without sound through uses of shot-reverse-shots and reaction shots. This also features a lot of flashbacks and foreshadowing which is something we would like to take inspiration from and use in our work.
I also want to take inspiration from ‘Somebody else’ by The
1975 with the twist ending because I personally find it curious and interesting which is something else we would like to incorporate.

Rough Plan For Our Music Video
George Watkins
Our music video has 8 different scenes with over 100
different shots in multiple different location throughout different timing
during the day meaning that planning this task well is crucial in meeting the deadline
and also making a good quality music video.
To help us for the planning of our music video we have a
shotlist which tells us what we need to film, when, where and how. Using our shotlist we have made a rough plan
of how we are going to go about this task for example we have split up the
clips into time of day, location and actors in the shot so that we can film
each section at one time to make good use of resources available and also time
for example filming all the shots that need to be done at one location at one
time is easier than having to return to the location multiple times to keep
filming different shots.
We will attempt to film this task over a week and a few days
before we eventually go to combine the clips on IMovie on the MAC’s in school
however to save time we will do some rough editing at home using the IMovie app
on an IPad which is just as good and is also a more efficient use of time and
then we can put the partially edited footage on the Mac and then fully edit the
clips together and have it ready to publish.

Research Into Chosen Artist's Music Videos
Billy Parker
The 1975 used to have all of their music videos in black and white, which was fitting of the genre. All of their music videos feature the lead singer in them regardless if they are narrative or performance based, apart from a few, for example 'Heart Out', 'Chocolate' and 'Ugh'
The 1975- Somebody else
Narrative
The band have also created what could be interpreted as one single love / break up story throughout their music videos:
Robbers - When the two characters are in love
A change of heart - The characters break up
Somebody else - The fallout for the male character
Inter textual references
Throughout The 1975's music videos they have a lot of links with other music videos. In the song 'Somebody Else' The band reference many of their other songs. An example of this is the reference to the song 'UGH' at the beginning of the video where they have a 3 minute shot which is the exact length of 'UGH' and a lot of the visuals link with the actual song.
In the song there are also photographs on the wall which are from the music video 'Robbers'.

In the video there is also a reference to their song 'Girls' with this neon light

There also is a link with another music video 'Chocolate' in which there is writing on a sign behind the main character in french which translates to 'poetry is in the streets in full living colour'.

This research will help us in creating our music video because we will be able to take the conventions of the band and apply it to our own. For example, the band have used a full narrative video which is common for their songs and so we will also be using a full narrative video.

Research Into Chosen Artist (the 1975)
George Watkins
My information was gathered from this source: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_1975
From: Cheshire, England
Genres: Indie rock, Pop, Electro pop
Years active: 2002 - present
Labels: Dirty Hit, Polydor, Vagrant, Interscope
Members: Matthew Healy (Lead vocals, rhythm guitar),
Adam Hann (Lead guitar), Ross McDonald (bass) and
George Daniel (Drums).
Net worth: $10,000,000
The 1975 formed by a group of school friends attending the Wilmslow High School and the group have been playing together since they were teenagers in 2002. There Gigs were organised by a council worker led band formally signed as ‘The 1975’, finding the name from a posthumous Jack Kerouac Beat poetry book. They eventually signed record deals with Dirty Hit and Polydor after a successful start to the bands life cycle.
The 1975 made their self-titled debut which was released on the 2nd of September 2013 through the record labels; Dirty Hit and Polydor, topping the UK album chart on September 8. Recently the 1975 have become more popular as in 2016 their album ‘I like it when you sleep, for you are so beautiful yet so unaware of it’ which was released in late February 2016 which went on to top both the UK charts and the US Billboard200. In their early career when they weren’t as well-known they made several appearances on radio stations to help promote their songs for example in late 2012 radio 1 DJ Zane Lowe invited the 1975 on show to perform their current single ‘sex’ which they released on the 19th of November in that same year. Also in 2012 the popularity of the 1975 grew further as they toured with the ‘Rolling Stones’ who were a very popular band at this time.
In 2013 the 1975 continued to gain popularity across the globe as in this year they released the album ‘VI’ which charted in the UK and was also aired in several other countries across the globe and they also went on several tours performing at multiple festivals including headlining at the Freedom festivals. 2014 saw even more festivals including festivals abroad as they performed at one of the most famous festivals in the world ‘Coachella’ which is held in the US and also touring in Australia and New Zealand.

Lip Syncing Practice
George Watkins
The song we are doing for this post is a song by Drake called 'Too Good' featuring Rihanna. The reason we have decided to do this song is because we know the song very well therefore we know the lyrics which will help improve the quality of our lip syncing to the song, also this song doesn't have a very fast tempo so it is easy to lip sync to as the slower the song the better you can stay in time with the lyrics.
Doing this task will help me and my group when we make our real music video as we can practice lip syncing and how if it isn't in time with the lyrics then it can dramatically make the music video look of a poor quality and also we can practice the technique of editing a lip sync clip to make it look as if they are actually singing the song by having the lip sync and the audio attachment of the song itself in time with one another.
The song we used isn't available on YouTube for an unknown reason so here is a slower version by Conor Maynard and Sarah Close :

Our Favourite Music Videos and Why
George and Billy
George -
It was hard to pick a particular favourite song or music
video for this however in the end I decided to go with the iconic ending of Fast
and Furious 7’s ending with the song of ‘See You Again’ by Wiz Khalifa ft. Charlie
Puth.
The reason this is my favourite music video is because of
its link with the film of Fast and Furious which created a very emotional end
to the film especially with the passing of Paul Walker who passed away in a
tragic car accident at the same time as the film was still being made. The Music
video from this song has clips from the film as well as clips of the artists as
well, this song gained a lot of popularity due its involvement with the film
and now has over 2 billion views on YouTube making it the second most viewed
music video on YouTube behind PSY’s Gangnam style.
The reason this song had such an impact on the film was due
its nature of the lyrics matched with the visuals as throughout the song at the
end of the film you can see flashbacks of Paul Walker from some of the previous
Fast and Furious films before eventually best friends in the film Paul Walker
and Vin Diesel split up and take different roads as they drive off into the
sunset making this one of the most memorable music videos for me and is
definitely up there with some of my favourite music videos.
My personal favourite music video would be ' Somebody Else' by The 1975. This is my favourite music video for a number of reasons. As The 1975 are one of my favourite artists this music video caters to me as a big fan of them. This is through the numerous references and throwbacks to some of their older songs and so I have a high respect for the length of time and detail that the band and the directors of the music video went through to make the video a more enjoyable experience. For example, having a sign in the background of the song which has a quote in french from their older music video 'Chocolate' which is only on the screen for about 1 second. I also like the tone of the music video and I like how there is a mixture between serious and comedy. I like how the song links with the video and I also like how the music video is fully narrative based as I personally prefer this for a narrative based song. It is also the last music video from the band's second album ' I like It When You Sleep, For You Are So Beautiful Yet So Unaware Of It' which is an album which signified a big change in the band's style and I personally really enjoyed the album.
This will help us as we will be using some influences from each video into our work and we will be looking to recreate things we like in hope that our target audience also like them.

Representation In Our Music Video
Billy Parker
Gender
In Our video we are going to portray both genders in quite a stereotypical manner. For example a female who cares about her appearance and we see a male who is drunk. However, in our video we also have some non stereotypical representations. For example we see an argument between the male and female and the female seems to take control of the situation which is non stereotypical because it is quite a masculine thing to do. One other example is we see the male checking his appearance in the same way that the female does, which could represent the character's feminine side. We also have the male character sulking and crying in a car which again is expected of females and not males. In terms of camera angles we will not have any direct angles which are sexual in terms of the female, however there will be quite a few camera angles which are from the perspective of a male looking towards the female which fits in with the male gaze theory. We will also have stereotypical costumes for genders. Our male will be wearing a white shirt which represents his good intentions.
Age
In our clip we will be having people very young around 18 years old, which the audience knows because they are drinking and also the main character drives a car. One reason for this is because this is our target market and we would like to appeal to them as best we can. I also believe that having this young age will have stereotypical representations in the clip as our video will depict how inexperienced and adolescent the younger generation is, with them drinking and getting into child-like arguments and problems. We also have our characters using technology a lot which represents that they are a part of the younger generation.
Sexuality
In our clip we will be depicting two straight characters, which is stereotypical in representations. However, in some parts of our video we will see the main male character depicted as quite feminine in a few scenes.
Ethnicity
In our video we only have representations of white people which is stereotypical as they are seen as the majority.
Disability
We have no representations of disability in our video.
Class
in our video we have representations of the middle social classes. This is because our main character is seen driving quite an old car which shows both that he isn't part of the lower classes (because he owns a car) and that he isn't a part of the higher social classes (car is quite old).
Regional Identity
In our video we have characters from the suburbs area. We have stereotypical representations for our video because we see the main character wearing expensive brand clothes and shoes which is something that is common and expected for young people from the suburbs.
