Final Magazine Advert
George Watkins
This is my final magazine advert which is the same as my third rough cut as I have made no improvements as my feedback from my third draft of my magazine advert suggested that no improvements could be made to effect the appearance and quality of the magazine advert.
To summarise on my magazine advert as you can see the main colours used on the poster are black, white and grey, the reason I have chosen these colours is because these are common colours used by The 1975 who are the band that we are using for inspiration when designing our media products and also our music video as we have made our music video to the song 'A Change of Heart' which is by The 1975, which you can see at the top of the poster as I have put into bold text the name of the band and the name of the song that I am promoting in this magazine advert.
As for some of the logo's at the bottom of the poster I have decided to include the record logo that we made in our group '25 records' to help promote our record label, I also have the iTunes logo to show the public where they can buy/ download the song/ album. I also have 4 social media account logo's, the reason I have done this is to give the work a more magazine advert type feel by using these logo's to promote the bands social media accounts and inform the public that they can follow the band on social medias such as Twitter and Facebook. Continuing on down the bottom of the poster I also have two 5 star ratings from newspapers as I have seen this used on magazine adverts I have seen when researching music magazine adverts and thought it would be a good feature to include to make my work stand out as an advert. Also I included a small bit of text down the bottom reading 'song available for download now' just simply to inform people that they can download the song and do not have to wait for a release date.
Finally the image used on my magazine advert which I changed the colour to from its natural colour to a black and white image, however the image which is my own did not have much relation to the music video so I added in figures of a man and a woman facing away from each other looking as if they are purposely ignoring one another, the reason I have added the figures in was to link the magazine advert to the music video as in our music video the main characters are a man and a woman who have a brief tale of love before falling out due to a secret being uncovered.
another few improvements I made were to make all logos in line which I have done however I have not put our record label logo in line with these logos as I want it to stand out and also make the size of the newspaper reviews bigger which I have also addressed.
Final Digipak
George Watkins
This is my final digipak made up of 4 different faces separated by a plain grey spine so that once the digipak is folded together it should like a CD case. To conclude on my final digipak it is quite clear I have used the same image for all 4 faces but of different colours, the reason I have done this is because I feel that it is simple but still looks good, the same image that appears on this digipak is also the same as the one on my magazine advert but of different colours, the reason I chose to use the same image was because I wanted to give the song/ album an identity or recognisable image which is why the same image has been used on both media products despite it differing slightly. Moving on to the back cover of my digipak which is the bottom left square, I have made the back cover of the digipak black and white to keep theme black and white theme associated with The 1975 and the indie genre. displayed on the back cover I have our record label in the bottom right corner for the same purpose as having it on the magazine advert, the promote our record label company, as well as this I have the list of all 17 songs on this album and also a bar code in the bottom left corner to give the work a digipak feel to it and make it seem as if you can actually buy it off the shelves.
As for the front cover of my digipak which is the bottom right red square I went for a very plain approach to keep the main focus on the band name and the album name as this is what I want the customers to see at first sight so black text on a light red background stands out for people to see, I chose red for the front cover as this colour links well with genre of the music video I believe as in the video there is a romance between a man and a woman and red is a colour often associated with romance and love. The top right cover is a plain green, this face will be the inside face that is next to face where the CD will sit, I decided to keep this face plain as I didn't want to over complicate the digipak or make it look scruffy by adding unnecessary features, however I could attach something to this face such as a slip of paper with information on it e.g. the list of songs on the CD which many CD's cases do have for example this one here;
The final cover I am yet to touch on is the one of which holds the CD on it, the CD will sit where the black circles are on the face, the reason I have added these black circles is to make it look like there a CD in the case as I want to show that the CD will have the image on it that it covers up from the background so the image in that face will look the same with and without the CD in it.

Magazine Draft 3
George Watkins
I haven't made many changes to my magazine advert from my 2nd draft however I have made one slight change as one highly recommended improvement suggested to me was to try and relate the magazine advert to the music video as it didn't relate to the music video at all in terms of the images or text used other than the black and white colour scheme as we use black and white clips in our music video for flashbacks. To address this problem I have carefully edited in a male and a female figure and changed the colour of them to a solid black so they fit in with the colour scheme of the advert, the reason for me adding these figures in was because in our music video we have a male and a female character who are the main characters seen within the video. The reason for the man and woman standing back to back seeming as if they are ignoring each other also relates to a scene in the music video when the woman finds out the man is cheating on his girlfriend with her and she gets very angry and leaves the pub disgusted with the male character.
I also have changed the centre image to black and white because not only is it a reference to the band themselves but also I think it contrasts nicely with the pink. The black and white can also be seen in our video as well as the photo is a scene in the video so the audience can relate all of the products together nicely. The black and white male praying is also a visual from my favourite music video 'Energy' by Drake and so shows influences from other medias, and possibly could attract the more mainstream audiences for young adults (Which I found out is the audience in my Drake - Audience Profile)
I also made the band's name larger because I thought my other magazine rough cuts seemed a bit too bottom heavy, and due to the nature of the album having such a long name there is not much I could change underneath, so I decided to make the band name bigger to try to even it out. Also I believe having the band name larger would jump out to audiences more and would attract a wider audience for the band.
I also changed the use of speech marks to forward and backward slashes, which is something the band used to use and so I wanted to make the magazine advert more recognisable to the fans of the band.

This is my final magazine advert design. It has changed from my original idea in a few way, including changing the background from black to a pink sky. I chose this because I wanted to have a way to link the magazine and digipak and so I thought a good way to do this would be to use the same style images in the background on both. This is better than using black because if I used black it would be too similar to the band's actual work. The pink also is very feminine which is suitable for the album and also the character in our work.I also have changed the centre image to black and white because not only is it a reference to the band themselves but also I think it contrasts nicely with the pink. Digipak Draft 3
George Watkins
This is my final digipak, I have made one small change from my second draft in that I addressed some feedback I received that I could try and link my colour scheme used on my digipak to my music video, for example I have changed the orange face as this has no relevance to music video whereas the red does as red is often linked to love and our music video involves a love story between a man and a woman who are the main characters in our music video. Some final feedback on my final digipak was that people liked the colours used on it and all the colours work well with the texts on the digipak as the text does stand out despite being layered onto a colourful background. Final bit of feedback also included that the top two images need to be flipped 180 degrees otherwise when you fold up the digipak they will be upside down.

Rough Cut 2 and Feedback
George Watkins
This is our rough cut 2 which isn't a full music video but a big improvement from our rough cut 2.
feedback we received on this rough cut consisted of;
positive; nice range of shots used for example in the bathroom when the camera is being used as a mirror by both the male and female, good and clear narrative so far, good locations and lighting.
negative; complete the music video, the 180 degree rule was broken in the scene at the pub, add some transitions perhaps at the flashbacks to emphasise on the change in time, could any lip syncing clips be shown to try and show off editing skills and finally could the visual quality of the music video be improved in anyway.

Magazine Draft 2
Billy Parker
This is my rough cut 2 for my magazine advert idea. One of the changes from rough cut one is the centre picture, which I changed due to feedback telling me the photo wasn't very well structured, which I agreed with. I decided to use this photograph because it links with our video nicely as it is seen in the video. I think it is an intriguing photo and it will attract the people reading the magazine because it brings a few questions to their minds. The photo has a lot significance with the title of the song as well as you can see a male contemplating over something and he looks fairly upset, possibly even praying.
I also have changed the outline of the rectangle because feedback I received included how the rectangle was too shaped and didn't look right and so I have changed the outline to a fade to hopefully make it seem more suitable and appealing to audiences.
George Watkins
This is my second rough cut for my magazine advert of which I have made several different changes to after receiving feedback from peers and teachers, some of the changes I have made from my first magazine draft are the fonts of all text which I have made the same and also made the text bold so that it stands out more, as well as this I also added in some social media account logo's to give the poster more of an advertising feel as having these logo's advertises to the public that you can follow the band on different social media platforms such as; twitter, Facebook, Instagram and sound cloud. Another slight change that I made based on feedback from class mates was to change the star ratings from the newspapers so that the stars and white instead of yellow as white fits in more with the colour scheme used for the magazine advert than the yellow which doesn't feature in the magazine advert anywhere else and also the yellow stars attracted the eye to much and they aren't the main focal point of this magazine advert.

Digipak Draft 2
George Watkins
I have made some small changes to my digipak from my first draft after I received feedback saying I could add some more institutional logos, make the CD circle look more realistic and also add some detail to the spine of the digipak, so I addressed this feedback by adding in an ITunes logo to the bottom right corner of the digipak front cover, adding some detail to the spine of the digipak between the front and back cover which is the main bit of spine that will be on show, the content I put on the side was the bands name (The 1975) multiple times just so that if the digpak was standing on a shelf you would be able to tell from this spine what music is inside the digipak. I also changed the plain black circle that was meant to represent the CD to make it actually look like a CD so its more realistic as from this you can see what you will and wont be able to see of the image on the face once the CD is in the digipak.
I received some more feedback for my second digipak and peers said that to improve I could look into relating the digipak to the music video more, perhaps see if other colours you could use that would be more suitable than the ones that are already being used.

Music Video Rough Cut 1 and Feedback
Billy Parker
In terms of rough cut 1, we have received a fair amount of both positives and negatives. One positive of our work so far is that the narrative is clear, which is something we were worried about. Another positive about our work from feedback is that there is a nice variety of shots in the work. Another example of a positive in our work are the mirror shots, which George and I also like how they turned out.
In terms of negatives, of course one of the largest is that the work is not completed. We will be working on this in the next few weeks. We have to film a large scene which takes up a lot of time in our video. We also need to try and steady some shots as some shots especially in the car are very shaky. Also it has been pointed out that the female character is wearing her shirt in bed which may not be typical or expected and so we are going to try and work a way around this.

Magazine Draft 1
George Watkins
This is the first rough cut I made for our groups magazine advert, I have the name of the band and the name of the song we are suppose to be advertising in white at the top of the page in a font also used by The 1975 themselves who are a band we have used thoroughly for inspiration a lot during multiple different tasks. the main feature of this magazine advert is the image of the wooden jetty stretching out into a lake, this is my own image that I took whilst visiting a friend in Finland therefore I am allowed to use it, the only tinkering I did on the image was changing it to black and white as these are common colours associated with the indie genre and the band The 1975. Below the image I have used a black box to try and blend the image in with it, on this black box I have a few features to try and make my work look more like a magazine advert for example I have added a couple of logos which are our record label and then the iTunes logo to inform customers where they can download the song, as well as these logo's I also have 2 newspaper article 5 star ratings which I included as people who see the advert may be convinced the song is very good. the last feature I haven't yet touched on is some more text on the black box which reads 'SONG AVAILABLE FOR DOWNLOAD NOW' however it is in different fonts which may need changing in future dates, the reason I have included this text is to show customers that the song is out and they can download it.
Billy Parker
This is my original idea for a magazine advert. I have chosen to use the rectangle which is iconic of The 1975 because I know that they have built an image around this rectangle design and I want to make our magazine advert recognisable to my target market. I have used simplistic fonts because it fits in with my research on indie magazine adverts as well as it fits in with The 1975's adverts. I chose to put the name of the artist on it's own at the top of the page because typically in the indie genre the bands are trying to gain exposure and so putting the name of the band at the top in order to try to catch the attention of consumers. I also have chosen to use a black background with white font because not only does it fit with the indie genre and the artist themselves, but it also links with some concepts of the song 'A Change of Heart' with there being conflicting themes throughout the song. On my magazine advert I have also chosen to not use any social media platforms as I believe it will cramp up the bottom of the page and it will mean that the simplistic and professional look will be lost. I also chose to use reviews on the magazine advert to try to sell the artist and single.
The image I have selected is of the character in the music video. I have chosen to do this contrary to the typical magazine adverts in the indie genre because I want our magazine advert to link with our video and digipak, and basically our whole music video is about the character. The photo I believe has significance to our video for a number of reasons. Firstly, it is a visual which you actually see in the video so people will be able to instantly relate the two. Secondly, the photo has a lot of significance to the character in our video. For example, there is a large amount of black taking up the screen which could connote how the character is in a dark stage in his life. There is only 3 forms of light, whcih are the lamp post, the speed limit sign, and the character's white shirt. I believe that there is a large amount of significance in this photo. we see the sign is in between the light and the character, which could have connotations of how there is danger in the character's life and how in order to get to nicer times in the character's life he will have to face the troubles. The character is facing away from both the light and the sign, which could represent how the character is trying to ignore the troubles in his life. The white of the character's shirt may be representative of how at heart the character is trying to do well and he is trying to do the right thing. White also connotes innocence, which could further represent how the character is young and isn't ready for the rest of the world which could be represented by all of the darkness in the photo.

Digipak Draft 1
George Watkins
This is my first draft for my digipak, despite planning on making a faced digipak I decided in the end to make one with 4 faces as I found it hard thinking of things to fill up all of the 6 squares and a design that I thought looked good so in the end I went for a 4 faced only used one of my own images however altered the colours so they appear different at first sight. on the bottom right face I have the band name 'The 1975' and also the name of the album below that as this is the front cover of the digipak as I do not want to much stuff on the front cover which could take the attention off the band name and album name. on the bottom left face which will be the back cover of the digipak I have our record label logo in the bottom right to promote our institute, I have a barcode on the bottom left to make it look like a real CD case/ digipak that you could purchase in a shop, as well as these small images I have all 17 names of the songs that are on this album by The 1975 in a white text so that they stand out on the dark image behind. finally the top 2 faces are rather simple, the green face will stay exactly how it is and is probably the least important face of the whole digipak as the blue face next to it holds the CD which will be placed in the location of the black circle and the CD will have the exact image on it that is within the black circle so that it matches the background image that it will fit onto.

Shotlist For Magazine
Billy Parker
In terms of my own magazine design which I had to do, I chose to use an exact video from our video in order to link the video with my magazine advert nicely. Some of the images which I plan to use include the following sections from our shot list:
For our magazine we already had a good idea for what we wanted, which was an image which George took whilst on holiday before, and we believed that it would suit our video nicely and we believe it can bused nicely to intrigue and attact a wide target market.

Shotlist for digipak
George Watkins
Our digipak is very simple and doesn't contain many shots/ images, the only image we used was one I from my own phone which I took on holiday so it wasn't even taken during the production of the music video, here is the image that I used.
Here is my digipak where you can see the changes I have made to this image to put onto the digipak.

Equipment information
Billy Parker
Equipment used in video:
Equipment used in video:
iPhone
iPhone stand
Light
For our video we decided to use an iPhone. This is because of the ease of access we had to it and how we could carry and set it up easily in different small locations, for example on a dashboard. The camera quality is also very good and so really we saw no downside to using an iPhone. One of the only problems we encountered whilst filming is that we ran out of memory space on the phone as there were a lot of clips which we were using, but it was easy to sort out and make some space and so it didn't hinder our work particularly.
We also decided to use an iPhone stand for some of our shots. The stand allowed us to safely hold a camera in one position in places like the bathroom. Overall we didn't use it for many shots because it's quite big and takes up a lot of room anywhere we were trying to film, which is why so much of our clip is filmed by hand. I personally prefer filming by hand because it can give the video a more of a realistic feel and can maybe make the audience feel more involved in the story line.
For some shots we had to use a light in order to make sure the camera could see everything in shot, as the camera was not very good in situations that are not lit very well.
